PURPOSE

CONSIDERATIONS
You need a BACKUP tube for each tube mic you own.
Tubes wear out, it's the nature of the beast, and session time costs more than tubes. If a tube goes south in the middle of a recording session, you're dust without a backup tube. And if you wait for the tube to get noisy before replacing it, you have not been recording at top performance!
As tubes age, they loose more and more detail and require more and more EQ (you can't get back what you've lost, and more EQ makes it worse).
The tube should be retired long before it gets noisy, or worse, fails, when it can damage other components in the mic.
If you swap in the backup tube every month or two for a vocal or piano test, your ears will tell you when NOT to put the old tube back in. If you don't have the time to do this, replace the tube within 12 months (assuming daily use).
